Karneval, Fastnacht, Fasching - these and more words describe carnival as celebrated in different parts of Germany. Depending on the region, city and sometimes village, there is a huge variety of rituals and traditions. The big parades are the most prominent part of these "crazy days". Easter - Ostern in German - marks an important holiday in Germany as in many other regions of the world. Painting eggs, an Easter egg hunt, a special festive meal and bright decorations in the house and outside are just a few common things to do and have around Easter. A lot of local traditions enriched by family traditions mark this holiday in spring.

Have you ever experienced a St. John's fire the night before St. John's Day on June 24th? Many customs and myths characterize this special time at the beginning of summer.

It has become a tradition over the decades in Germany for children to send letters to Father Christmas or the Christ Child. Dedicated Christmas post offices across the country reply back. The letters are beautifully decorated with christmas stamps and a special cancellation. The word has spread and mail comes in before Christmas from all over the world!

The beginning of May is celebrated with a number of rituals that might differ locally in Germany. Many villages are proudly raising a decorated maypole. Other villages may try to steal it and there is some food, beer and music involved, too. Find out more about about May celebrations on this lovely card!

Around January 6th, Epiphany, you can spot groups of children dressed up as Three Magi in many areas of Germany. They walk from door to door, singing songs, collecting money for charities,and blessing the houses. A wonderful start to the year during a dark month!
